With the last of summer warmth slowly fading, Brits are being alerted to a surge in insect woes, including those pesky fruit flies that can be more than just a nuisance as they make their way inside homes more than ever. These tiny critters not only irritate but also pose hygiene issues, and tackling a serious infestation could hit your wallet with costs up to £260 for pest control services.
Storage guru Chris Hutton from Adams Selfstore has come to the rescue with his expert advice on how to fend off fruit fly invasions this season, as well as how to deal with any current ones.
In a surprising twist, Chris advises against overwatering plants as a strategy to keep fruit flies at bay. He explains: "Fruit flies and other common pests, such as gnats, thrive on the fungus of your plants. Therefore, it can be extremely beneficial to resist the urge to keep your plants topped up with water throughout the summer and let your plants dry out between waterings." He continues, highlighting that this method not only kills the fungus but also eradicates fruit fly eggs and larvae as the soil dries.
For persistent problems, he suggests using an indoor-friendly insecticide as a soil drench to eliminate both the fruit flies and fungus.
