More than 80,000 people across the UK are thought to be owed a total of £500m by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), mostly including married women, widows, and people over a certain age.
The average sum owed to each of these people amounts to £6250 in money that was owed to them in the first place. The latest published figures from a review of DWP payments have identified 82,323 potential underpayments, including married women and widows who reached State Pension age before April 2016.
The DWP is due to publish an update on their progress in paying this money back to people before the end of March. This huge sum of money owed to people also includes anyone aged over 80, regardless of their marital status.
It is believed that the number of people underpaid by the pension system could be much higher once the DWP has completed its review, with up to 230,000 people owed money - which so far has ranged from £2,245 to £12,383 per person.
