A couple who abandoned their dog and her litter, leaving them to die, have avoided going to prison. Liat Best and Dean Nevin, both of Hughes Avenue, in Prescot, stood before Liverpool Magistrates' Court with bags in hand having previously pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

The court heard that a Staffordshire Bull Terrier crossbreed named Lilly and her three puppies were found in a flat in Prescot in September 2023.

They were thought to have been abandoned since July. The RSPCA called on Merseyside Police to help gain entry to the property after dogs could be heard locked inside on September 19, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Peter Mitchell, prosecuting, shared photos of the property. READ MORE: Building society launches new £5,000 deposit mortgage for first time buyers The pets were found on top of a dirty mattress surrounded by urine and faeces.
