Burns clubs gathers in Fountain Park to commemorate death of the bard

Renfrewshire Burns Clubs gathered to commemorate the 226th anniversary of the death of Scotland's best loved poet.Robert Burns passed on July 21 in 1796 and every year people come together to celebrate the life and legacy of the bard.Clubs from Renfrewshire and Inverclyde met up at the Fountain Gardens on Thursday evening for their own wreath-laying ceremony at the Robert Burns statue there.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.The Greenock and Gourouck Burns Clubs turned out, as well as the Jolly Beggars, the Robert Burns World Federation from Kilmarnock, the Paisley Burns Club and the Alamo Burns Club among others.George Grant, secretary of the Renfrewshire Association of Burns Clubs said that he was glad to get back to normal after Covid-19 restrictions having affected the previous year’s events.He said: “There was one last year, but obviously we had to adhere to all the covid rules, masks, etc.

and so this was a lot better.”Graham Russell was on the pipes, Arthur Boyle, president of the Renfrewshire association of Burns Clubs was there to welcome guests and lead them in a short prayer before Graham Russell played a lament and wreaths were laid at the foot of the statue.Councillor Cathy McEwan filled in for the provost of Renfrewshire, she laid a wreath on behalf of the council.The Robert Burns World Federation and the Renfrewshire Association of Burns Clubs also laid wreaths.Following the ceremony, snacks and drinks were had at the Caledonia Bowling Club where the Alamo Burns Club have been based since departing the Alamo Bar.George said: “We went back to the Caledonia Bowling Club for for coffee, tea, refreshments, and we had a bit of a blether and a bit of a catch
