Brendan Rodgers has explained why he left three new Celtic signings out of his squad for the Champions League while Alexandro Bernabei and Benjamin Siegrist also didn't make the cut.The Hoops boss boasts considerable depth and takes over a larger squad than Ange Postecoglou left him with.

Maik Nawrocki, Marco Tilio and Hyeokkyu Kwon were all signed in the summer but haven't been registered for the European squad, meaning they cannot play in the Champions League group stage.Rodgers admits it was a tough decision picking just 25 players but the strict limitations on squad size made it difficult - while uncertainty over when the likes of Nawrocki would be back from injury also played into his thinking.

And he admits that versatility gave some of his stars an edge – with Liam Scales picked while backup left-back Bernabei was not.The Scales and Bernabei situation was put to him as an example and Rodgers said: "It was exactly that.

Obviously you're looking at a number of things, you have eight associated home-trained players which leaves you 17. So you're then having to strategically look it at and the players that are going to come in and the players where you need cover."And then obviously you're weighing up injuries as well.
