Brendan Rodgers suffered heartache on his last visit to the Stadio Olimpico. But the Celtic manager is convinced his boys can stand and fight and give him a night to remember this time in Rome.Rodgers returns to the Italian capital hoping for a massive Champions League result that will keep his current club’s European adventure alive for the season.
The boss was at the venue in May of last year for a semi-final of the Conference League with his old team Leicester. On that occasion, it was Roma counterpart Jose Mourinho who was again the special one as Tammy Abraham’s winner put the Italians into the Final.Rodgers recalls the evening if not the result with fondness as he dreams of one night taking Celtic back onto such an exalted latter stage in Europe.
He said: “It was my first time here and it was an amazing atmosphere. The stadium was full and the noise was absolutely fantastic and fitting of a semi-final.“We conceded a disappointing goal from a set-piece with Tammy Abraham scoring and that was the goal that knocked us out.
But it was a great occasion and I am really happy to be back here again.“It would be amazing to take Celtic to a European semi-final at some stage in the future, but there is a lot of growth needed for us to keep improving.
