Blackpool Tower pictured as it lights up minutes after reports of 'fire' sparks chaos

People have gone back to enjoying their leisure time in Blackpool following dramatic scenes this afternoon. Earlier, eyewitness reports and statements from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service indicated that a blaze had broken out at the top of Blackpool Tower.

Streets were cordoned off and a number of emergency service personnel descended on the scene, with the Tower evacuated. However, police later said what appeared to be a blaze was instead "orange netting".

A statement from Lancashire Police's Divisional Commander Ch Supt Karen Edwards reads: "We are at the scene in support of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Blackpool Council and Merlin Entertainment. "The top of the tower is currently closed for renovation and difficult to access.
