Churches in Ayr are throwing open their doors to provide ‘warm spaces’ for those in need this winter. Rising energy bills and the cost-of-living crisis has prompted four churches in the town to act.St.
Margaret’s Cathedral, St Columba Church, Riverside Church and Auld Kirk of Ayr are providing a welcoming place for people to gather for heat, a hot drink and some company.Father David Borland, of St.
Margaret’s Cathedral on John Street, said: “One of the main reasons was to do with the economic crisis and the cost of heating.“I know folk who come to this church - people you would think were reasonably well off - who are frightened to put their heating on.“These are people who at first glance you think have a good life, and they are struggling.“We thought we’ve got a hall, folk can come here for a few hours if they want to.“They can have a cuppa, have a chat with their friends, read a book, read a newspaper, switch their heating off at home."Fr.
David said the ‘warm space’ is “for absolutely anybody”, adding: “No judgements will be made.”He continued: “It’s operating as a cafe, a social meeting point.“There’s nothing flash.
