Another Greater Manchester maternity service has been hit with criticism from health watchdogs amid a national investigation into maternity care.

Tameside General Hospital’s maternity services have dropped from a ‘good’ to ‘requires improvement’ amid a ‘deterioration in the standard of care’, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has said.

Inspectors found expectant mothers were facing long waits to be seen; delays to treatment; and queues for further medical reviews. "We also found that the dedicated triage telephone line wasn’t always answered by a trained member of staff which could place people at risk if their concern was dealt with by someone who didn’t have the right knowledge or skill,” the CQC added.

The inspection report, published today (Friday, March 15), found ‘some areas of the maternity unit weren’t clean and not all staff had completed infection prevention and control training’.
