Meteorological spring has kicked off from today following a mixed bag of conditions during the winter just passed. Scots were treated to some snow flurries and the odd frosty morning, while temperatures appeared to stay above the average during the past few months.
Many will be happy to see the back of the winter as we progress quickly through 2022.The Met office refers to March 1 as the ‘meteorological spring’ which is based off the four splits of the Gregorian calendar.Months that fall under the bracket of spring months are March, April and May.
The ‘astronomical spring’ - which is based on the position of Earth’s orbit in relation to the sun - will begin on March 20 and end on June 21.
News of the meteorological spring has got Scots looking ahead to the summer months, which are just round the corner. As we move into March, the daylight hours are getting longer - but maybe not as quick as most of us are hoping for.But there will be a huge shift later this months, when the clocks shift forward an hour for British Summer Time at 1am on March 27.Benjamin Franklin came up with the concept of changing the clocks in Paris in 1784.The inventor suggested that people could save money on candles if they got up when it was lighter outside. In 1907, this idea was brought to the UK by a builder called William Willett, who published a leaflet called The Waste of Daylight, encouraging people to wake up earlier.
