A Paisley mum says both she and her daughter could have died after the fire alarm failed to sound during a blaze in her council flat.Natalie McDevitt and her 10-year-old daughter left their home on Achray Drive on Wednesday evening to go to the shop.

When they returned, the flat was engulfed in flames with their beloved cat Zevon trapped inside. The fire was put out by firefighters around 7pm but they were called back again at 6am on Thursday when something in the property ignited for a second time. The 30-year-old has since, she says, discovered the fire alarm in the ground-floor flat had not been connected to the power supply. It’s thought the fire may have started as a result of an electrical fault, while Natalie claims Renfrewshire Council moved her into a potential death trap with no working fire alarm for safety.“It’s been horrendous.

I moved back in on the Monday and by Wednesday evening everything in the house was gone,” she said. “The fact is my cat perished in that fire and it could have been me and my daughter.Renfrewshire Live, the new free app dedicated to bringing you around the clock breaking news, is now available to download.Powered by the Paisley Daily Express, Renfrewshire Live is your go-to source for news, features and sport with live coverage provided direct to the app, seven days a week. The dedicated team of experienced journalists, responsible for the publication of the award-winning Express, will focus on breaking news, day and night, across Renfrewshire’s towns and villages. There is also a dedicated St Mirren section that will follow every kick of the ball with the Buddies.
