hereThe wearing of masks or facial coverings to combat the spread of Covid-19 has been optional in most settings during the pandemic lockdown.But as restrictions continue to ease, that position changes on Friday, when wearing a mask becomes law in shops.Face masks or coverings will become compulsory in shops and supermarkets in England from July 24, as well as on public transport where they have been mandatory since June 15.The government says the best available scientific evidence is that, when used correctly, wearing a face covering may reduce the spread of coronavirus droplets in certain circumstances, which in turn helps to protect others.Police have the powers to enforce the measures through £100 fines, reduced to £50 if paid within 14.
