A Volkswagen Golf has been seized - after it was allegedly spotted 'weaving through traffic at high speed in bad weather' - on Mancunian Way on Saturday night.

Greater Manchester Police say the driver had received a Section 59 warning from Lancashire Police last December and the vehicle was seized after being served with a Section 60 authority last night.

A Section 60 is a unique power intended to prevent serious violence or the commission of offences involving the use of weapons or dangerous instruments and must only be applied where its use can be justified.

A Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 establishes that where a police constable in uniform has reasonable grounds for believing that a motor vehicle is being used on any occasion in a manner which contravenes section 3 or section 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (careless and inconsiderate driving and prohibition of off-road driving) and is causing, or is likely to cause alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public, a constable in uniform has the power to order the person driving to stop the vehicle, to seize and remove the vehicle.
