There will be low levels of coronavirus transmission for a 'very long time', a government doctor has warned. Deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam said Covid-19 will remain 'in and around us in our communities' even if we can 'keep the levels right down'.
Replying to a question at Friday's daily press confernce Dr Van-Tam said scientists had been clear that closing borders 'would not work' as a measure to prevent the ingress of coronavirus into the UK. "I understand the point you’re making and I see where you’re coming from, in terms of when we get this under control, doesn’t that change the situation," he told the briefing.
