Health chief on why beer gardens, garden centres and beaches will still be no-go for some time - despite 'less problematic' coronavirus transmission outdoors

A health chief said it was 'categorically clear' that outdoor spaces were 'less problematic environments for transmission' of coronavirus than indoor spaces were.

But questioned over a possible return to public use of beaches and beer gardens, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said the UK had to be 'extremely sure-footed and extremely painstaking' over the future relaxation of lockdown guidelines.

England's deputy chief medical officer said the Government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) was keeping evidence 'under very detailed review' and formulating it into guidance being presented to ministers.

But he said Covid-19 would be 'with us for quite some time' and would 'absolutely come back' should lockdown measures be eased too
