When you are ill or injured the last thing you want to do is sit around in A&E waiting to be seen. In emergency cases, like a suspected heart attack, stroke or serious head injury, of course it is the best place for you.
But what if you don’t fall into that ‘critical’ category but still need to be seen? The current national waiting time target for A&E is four hours from arrival to admission, transfer or discharge.
However, with many people using A&E for non-urgent problems, these waiting times can increase. Often patients turn up to A&E with nasty chest infections or minor injuries which require treatment but are not considered medical emergencies.
