The inaugural Renfrew Pipe Band Competition begins today and an MSP has praised the event at Holyrood

With the inaugural Renfrew Pipe Band Competition set to get underway today the efforts of its organisers and participants have been praised in parliament.The event is taking place in Robertson Park between noon and 5pm and it will see pipe bands from across the country competing against one another.As well as the pipers, spectators will be able to enjoy free family entertainment, aerial workshops, a farmer's market, food village, and more at the free event.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.Russell Findlay, the Conservative and Unionist West of Scotland MSP, raised a motion in Holyrood on Wednesday, July 20 to recognise the event.His motion reads: “That the parliament recognises the inaugural Renfrew Pipe Band Competition, which takes place on 23 July 2022; welcomes the new event, which is free to attend at Robertson Park, Renfrew; notes the participation of local bands including Renfrewshire Schools, Paisley and District RBL Pipe Band, Kilbarchan Pipe Band and others from elsewhere in Scotland; further notes that organisers will provide other entertainment including a food village and farmers' market; appreciates what it sees as the importance of piping as an integral part of Scottish cultural heritage; congratulates the event’s chieftain, the poet Shaun Moore, who is the Tannahill Makar for Renfrewshire, and wishes good luck to everyone in the competition.”Commenting on the event, Shaun Moore said: "It's a big honour to have been asked to be Chieftain at the first pipe band competition in Renfrew."As a member of the local creative community I enjoy making links with performers from other disciplines and sharing in the great work we all do to showcase talent in our
