Bolton man Lewis Peake, 30, is one of four defendants currently on trial for manslaughter and conspiracy to rob, following the death of the 34-year-old joiner, on August 6 last year.
Peake's lawyer Michael Brady QC told the jury at Manchester Crown Court that the prosecution's case was 'built on a theory', with 'plenty of hypotheses' and 'hyperbole'.
The prosecution case, as summed up by Mark Ford QC, is that Peake hatched a plan to steal Mr McMyler's £11,250 gold Rolex Submariner watch, after meeting him in Wigan town
