Schmitz became a popular feature on the BBC's Top Gear after first appearing on the show in 2004. She revealed her cancer diagnosis to fans last year after being forced to pull out of a racing event at the last minute.

The tragic news of her death, following a four year battle with cancer, was revealed by the German track she was famous for racing, the Mirror reports. "The Nurburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver," a statement read. "Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness.
