German racing legend and Top Gear star Sabine Schmitz has died aged 51, it was announced today. Schmitz, widely known as Queen of the Nurburgring, revealed last year that she had been battling cancer since 2017.

She was known for appearing on BBC’s Top Gear over the years. Nurburgring, the iconic German racing track, said in a statement on Wednesday: “The Nurburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver.

Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness. We will miss her and her cheerful nature. Rest in peace Sabine!”Schmitz explained in a social media post last year that her absence from the Nurburgring Endurance Series was due to cancer.
