Last night Russell Brand took to his YouTube channel to refute ‘serious criminal allegations’ against him.The 48 year old said that while he was “very promiscuous” back in his showbiz heyday, his relationships he had were “absolutely always consensual.” He explained he had been contacted by a “mainstream media company” and a newspaper with some “very serious allegations” that he “absolutely refute.” This comes after speculation has arisen about what the subject of Channel 4’s investigation show Dispatches is about, with social media awash with theories.

At 9pm tonight the channel is broadcasting a 90-minute special, and according to The Mirror, “is set to highlight bad behaviour by a household name.” While the rumour mill was in overdrive, Russell took to his YouTube account, which boasts over 6 million followers, to make his position clear.

Russell said: “I’ve received two extremely disturbing letters - well a letter and an email - one from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks - as well as some pretty stupid stuff…” Later in the nearly 3-minute video he said: “Amidst this litany of astonishing, rather baroque attacks are some very serious allegations that I absolutely refute. These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies.

As I’ve written about extensively in my books, I was very very promiscuous. During that time of promiscuity the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. "I was always transparent about that then, almost too transparent, and I’m being transparent about it now, as well.
