Rob Delaney on the agony on losing his two-year-old son: 'The heaviest pain in the world'

And now in his upcoming book entitled A Heart That Works, he has described the ‘heaviest pain’ that he and Leah experienced while Henry was terminally ill. ‘[It was] the heaviest pain in the world.

I felt like I had suddenly quadrupled in weight, and an oily, black whirlpool began to swirl where my heart had been. ’In an excerpt from the book, published in The Times, Delaney said he felt like a ‘decaying disused train station’ during that time period.

He added that ‘freight train after freight train overloaded with pain roars through you,’ while caring for a child who is seriously unwell.

He admitted that, while crafting the train station analogy to better understand his situation, his mind had wandered to dark places. ‘[I thought] maybe one will derail and explode, destroying the station and killing you, and you can go and be with your child.
