Former Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has expressed his concerns that Mason Mount's career could "fade" at Old Trafford.

Meulensteen said so while drawing parallels with Donny van de Beek's ill-fated transfer to the club. Mount made a high-profile move from Chelsea to United last summer in a £60million deal, beating off competition from Arsenal and Liverpool for the England international's signature.

However, the much-anticipated switch has not lived up to expectations for either player or club, with the 25-year-old limited to just 14 appearances last season due to a series of injuries.

Meulensteen, who served under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, fears that Mount, like Van de Beek, may not fit into Erik ten Hag's system at United, reports the Daily Star. "Sometimes when you stick to a certain system, it's hard to fit certain players and I fear he could be the new Donny and his career could fade at United." Mount has struggled to hold down a regular place in Ten Hag's starting XI, with the Dutchman using him in central and attacking midfield roles.
