Cyriel Dessers kept Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title hunt with yet another vital goal as his header took his tally to 20 for the season and earned a desperately needed 2-1 victory over St Mirren in the first post-split fixture of the season.
Philippe Clement’s ended their winless league run which was looking like being extended to four games when James Bolton’s own goal was cancelled out by the impressive Mikael Mandron but Dessers headed home to settle the nerves and go level on points with Celtic at the summit before the champions later game at Dundee.
This was the real pressure point of the season and the visitors needed a win - and maybe a convincing one with goal difference potentially coming into play - but the start was shaky to see the least given what was at stake.
James Tavernier was sloppy early on to gift Mandron with a great chance but Jack Butland made the save and the Englishman had to save again from the same player just minutes later, albeit the offside flag would probably have gone up.The home side were bright from the first whistle, pressing Rangers yet John Lundstram was a whisker away from giving the Light Blues the lead with a curling effort just past the post.
