Queen Camilla is 'no pushover' as she celebrates wedding anniversary with Charles

Even though King Charles and Queen Camilla are celebrating their 19th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, 9 April, the couple have been in one another's lives, on and off, for more than five decades.

Their partnership is built on a thoroughly level playing field as they give one another all the love and support they need to tackle whatever life throws at them. “Camilla knows how to deal with her husband,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond points out. “He is a man who is used to getting his own way and being (literally) king of the castle! "But she is no push over – she will just gently manoeuvre Charles to where she wants him – and I think she has preserved her sanity in the crazy world of royalty by maintaining her bit of normal life at her own house in Wiltshire." Jennie adds: “Respect for the Queen must surely have soared in recent weeks as she has taken on a hefty workload in a job she never really expected or wanted. "I think she might be quite surprised to know that she is widely admired and that there is now real affection for her – and genuine goodwill for them both as they celebrate 19 years together since that day when she was so nervous about the wedding that she had to be coaxed out of bed!” Looking back throughout her career covering their relationship, the moment they emerged as a couple and every milestone they have marked since, Jennie reflects on the events that led to the pair finally tying the knot. “There must have been so many times when Charles despaired of ever being allowed to live openly with the woman he has loved for 50 years,” she says.
