Do you prefer pea wet or gravy with your chippy tea? That is what new ‘ballot bins’ are asking Wiganers in a bid to stop cigarette ends being dropped on the floor.
The bins will ask tongue-in-cheek questions to get smokers in the town centres of Wigan and Leigh to put their butts where they belong – in the bin, not on the street.
For those unaccustomed to this local vernacular ‘pea wet’ is the water juice from mushy peas, and gravy is just gravy. These bins have been used successfully in other boroughs around Greater Manchester, with Mancunians choosing between Liam and Noel Gallagher or whether they call a certain bread format a barm or a muffin. Keep Britain Tidy estimates that 66 per cent of all littered items are cigarette butts with the vast majority of all cigarettes smoked ending up on the floor.
