Nurse will 'never take showers for granted again' after gruelling Sahra Desert challenge

A Kilwinning nurse admits she’ll never take showers for granted again after a week trekking the Sahara Desert. Elaine Kerr headed out to Africa with five other North Ayrshire walkers in a bid to raise cash for Ayrshire Hospice.

Between the six of them they’ve raised over £31,000 for the charity, which made the gruelling 105km walk worth it. Elaine told Ayrshire Live: “There was six of us trekked the Sahara Desert for Ayrshire Hospice.“We signed up to do it in 2020, but it didn’t happen due to Covid.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news and the latest on the coronavirus crisis – at your fingertips 24/7.The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories while you can customise your page with the sections that matter to you.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now on iOS and Android.“We spent a week out there, walked every day, slept in a tent at night.“There were no shower facilities and it was a terrible toilet situation!“It was gruelling, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve made memories and friends for a lifetime.“What a fantastic team we had, that’s what pulled you through each day.“I was delighted when it was over though, just to get a shower was amazing, I stood in one for about half an hour!“I’ll never take the small things for granted again, that’s for sure.“The weather was extreme, it was mid to high 30 degrees most days, it was roasting.”Elaine added: “The Hospice is always something I’ve supported.“But my friend’s dad used the service a few years ago so I just wanted to give something back.“As a team of six we’ve raised over £31,000, so that helps them out a bit which is great.”Don't miss the latest
