While the developers stress that it's not a battle royale mode, it will apparently share some similar characteristics. One of the other game modes for Battlefield's multiplayer, All-Out Warfare, is already capable of accommodating 128 players fighting on a large scale map.
Therefore, it's not a bold assumption that the game is already capable of accommodating enough players to engage in a battle-royale-like experience.
