MoneySavingExpert (MSE) has revealed that 10million people, many of whom are vulnerable, have been wrongly advised by the UK Government to switch their energy tariff at a time when a crisis in the market means it would cost them hundreds of pounds to do so.

MSE reports that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has sent out letters to people likely to be eligible for Winter Fuel Payments, featuring incorrect and financially damaging wording on the reverse of the envelopes that encourages switching energy tariff to save 'an extra £290'.

Recipients of the letters were also advised to contact Citizens Advice for more information. MSE has now alerted the charity to the mistake and it has asked the DWP to fix the error.
