Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes (born 8 September 1994) is a Portuguese footballer who plays for Primeira Liga club Sporting CP and the Portugal national team as a midfielder. Fernandes started his career at Serie B side Novara Calcio and soon featured for Udinese and Sampdoria in Serie A.
In 2017, he signed with Sporting CP where he established himself as one of the best players in the Primeira Liga. He was named the LPFP Primeira Liga Player of the Year in both 2017–18 and 2018–19. In the latter season, he also helped Sporting win the Taça de Portugal. A senior international since 2017, Fernandes represented Portugal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Ralf Rangnick insists Erik ten Hag should have the final say on any Manchester United contract renewals. United announced Bruno Fernandes had extended his contract by only a year on April 1 even though his previous deal had a final expiry date of 2026.
Fernandes, 27, was rewarded with a salary raise after two productive years following his signing from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 but the Portuguese's performance level has plummeted this season and his form since the renewal has been particularly poor.
Anthony Elanga signed an improved contract during Rangnick's first month as interim manager while Anthony Martial and Phil Jones inked new deals while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still caretaker manager.
Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw signed new contracts in Jose Mourinho's final months even though Mourinho had scoured for a left-back to replace Shaw for 18 months.
