Older people and those who are pregnant have been warned by food safety experts not to eat smoked fish due to its link to listeria.
Listeria is a type of bacteria found in chilled ready-to-eat fish and shellfish which causes food poisoning. It is found in a variety of smoked fishes including smoked salmon.
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) reports that there have been eight recorded cases of listeriosis in the UK reported since January this year, with a total of 14 cases since 2020.While Listeria is not serious for most people, there is a higher risk of serious problems occurring in vulnerable groups.
Among the elderly and expecting mothers, it can also cause serious problems for those with weakened immune systems. As reported by the Mirror, Ian McWatt, Food Standards Scotland (FSS) Deputy Chief Executive, said: “While the risks to the general public of becoming seriously ill due to listeria are very low, we need people who are vulnerable to be aware of the ongoing risks of consuming ready-to-eat smoked fish.
