Lee Elder, who was the first Black golfer to play in the Masters tournament, has sadly passed away at the age of 87.
The PGA Tour announced his death on social media, after the African American Golfers Digest‘s first report. While no cause was disclosed, Lee‘s family confirmed his passing, which occurred on Sunday, November 28, in Escondido, Calif. “Lee was a good player, but most important, a good man who was very well respected by countless people,” Jack Nicklaus wrote in tribute to Lee on Twitter. “The game of golf lost a hero in Lee Elder.” He continued, “Lee Elder was a pioneer, and in so many ways.
