Hundreds of electric vehicular charging points to be installed across Manchester

Manchester City Council is expected to install over 200 charging points around Manchester over two years. With a national ban expected to come over the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the number of electric vehicles are expected to increase. As of April last year, 155 charging points with 300 connectors are around Manchester however, this won’t nearly be enough for the future.

It is estimated that around 140,00 vehicles in Manchester will be electric covering around 75% of all vehicles in the city. It is expected that the new charging points will be placed in council-owned car parks, libraries, leisure centres and more.

Manchester City Council will invest over £3m into the charging points and their installation, with over £1m coming from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and £2m from the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund.

The council currently has a list of over 40 public areas suitable for electric charging points that will be reviewed for approval.
