Greenock firebomb murder bid accused ‘slashed’ and ‘beaten’ by prisoner in jail attack

A man charged with petrol bombing a house in Greenock has been left injured after being ‘slashed’ in prison. Craig MacFarlane was reportedly knifed while standing on a communal hallway landing at HMP Greenock on Saturday afternoon.

The 26-year-old is understood to have suffered injuries to his face and body after he was also allegedly punched and kicked by a fellow inmate.

A source told the Daily Record that he required stitches for the knife wounds, which are not believed to be life-threatening.MacFarlane is on remand at the jail after being charged with torching a property on Greenock’s Union Street in July 2020.Prosecutors claim he did “wilfully set fire to cloth within glass bottles containing accelerant, commonly known as a petrol bomb”.The charge against him alleges that he then threw a number of Molotov cocktails at the property resulting in the window frame and curtain catching fire.MacFarlane is also accused of attempting to murder Rosaleen Sutherland and Leonard Cole, who were in the house at the time.He made no plea during two private appearances at Greenock Sheriff Court and was remanded in custody.The Daily Record and Sunday Mail have always been at the forefront when it comes to reporting crime in Scotland.But did you know all the ways you can stay informed of the top crime and courts headlines?We share live crime news and exclusive court stories as well as features and columns on historical cases, keeping our readers informed and updated across the country.He is expected to stand trial alongside six other men later this year on a murder conspiracy rap.
