Fuel and flight price cuts see inflation drop to 1.7 per cent in September

Inflation in the UK decreased in September to 1.7 per cent, the lowest reading since April 2021, according to official data.
The most notable price change was seen in the average cost of passenger air travel, which fell by 5.0 per cent in the year to September, after previously soaring by 11.9 per cent in the 12 months to August. READ MORE: DWP issues major update after carers told to pay back thousands in benefit overpayments Other products that switched from rising to falling prices include pizzas and quiches, which saw a decrease of 3.3 per cent in the 12 months to September after a rise of 4.3 per cent in August; carpets and rugs, which were down 2.9 per cent last month after a 0.6 per cent increase in August, and butter, which decreased by 0.2 per cent after a 0.9 per cent increase in August.
Petrol and diesel both recorded larger annual price drops in September than in August, with petrol down 10.9 per cent last month compared to a drop of 4.2 per cent in August, and diesel down 9.9 per cent compared to a drop of 2.2 per cent, according to figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
