A driver spotted by police at a standstill on the M56 was using their phone to search for directions. North West Motorway Police say the the light blue Kia Picanto stopped on the M56 near junction 3 for Altrincham and Wythenshawe on Saturday afternoon.
The car had parked up on a 'tigers tail' - chevron markings that guide traffic when a motorway splits. The driver told officers they had stopped on the tigers tail to use navigation on their phone. READ MORE: Man, 67, who died in three-vehicle crash is named A picture posted by North West Motorway Police showed the vehicle stopped below gantry signs advising which direction to follow.
The driver of the vehicle was issued a Traffic Offence Report (TOR), which is issued when an officer has reason to believe someone has committed a specified road traffic-related offence.
The caption accompanying the image read: "Driver stopped on tigers tail to use navigation on phone - not reading motorway gantry signs above her - TOR issued." The incident took place on the same day that changes to the Highway Code came into affect.
