McLeod, 36, had downed three vodkas before getting behind the wheel of the car in his hometown of Kilwinning, Ayrshire. And officers discovered he was more than double the drink-drive limit after they pulled him over following their near miss.

The details emerged yesterday when McLeod appeared in the dock at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court to be sentenced. He had earlier pleaded guilty to driving the car without the owner's permission, drink-driving, driving while disqualified and driving while uninsured.
