Coronation Street’s Helen Worth has been spotted for the first time since quitting the soap after an incredible five decades - and she looked rather downcast. The Corrie legend, who has played Gail Platt for 50 years, was spotted out in London shopping at Sainsbury’s, sporting casual jeans and a padded coat.

Helen, 73, announced her departure from the soap on Wednesday 5 June, issuing a statement via ITV that said: "This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.

I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding. "I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.” Fans were completely shocked by Helen’s announcement with one fan writing on social media: “What do you MEAN Helen Worth, the legend, the icon, that is Gail Platt, is leaving Corrie omg we're never gonna witness these iconic moments again”.

Another added: “Oh no. Helen's one of my favourite actresses in Corrie. She's like in the fabric of the show like Bill & Barbara & Sue.
