The cast of Coronation Street dedicated its BAFTA award on Sunday to Sophie Lancaster in a moving moment at the ceremony. The best soap award was accepted by actress Sally Dynevor, Sally Webster in Corrie, who dedicated it to tragic Sophie and her mother Sylvia.
Sophie was murdered in August 2007 aged 20 after being targeted along with her boyfriend Robert Maltby for wearing dreadlocked hair, dark clothing and piercings.
Robert woke from a coma a week after the attack but Sophie tragically died. Speaking at the BAFTA ceremony , Sally said: “Working on this show is just a privilege and the drama and the comedy goes so well on Corrie. “One of the most important stories we’ve told this year was the hate-crime story, so we would like to dedicate this to Sophie Lancaster and her mother Sylvia Lancaster.Thank you.” Get exclusive celebrity stories and fabulous photoshoots straight to your inbox with OK!'s daily newsletter Sophie’s killing in Bacup, Lancashire shocked the nation and raised awareness of the horrifying consequences of hate crime.
Coronation Street worked with Sophie’s mum Sylvia for the hate crime storyline which saw characters Seb and his goth girlfriend Nina attacked.
