His father was a GP in the NHS, but back when things were even harder than they are now. He told The Telegraph: “My father was an NHS GP in the days when they worked around the clock and for very little money, so money was always tight.
While food in the cupboards and a roof over your head were always a given, anything else above that was a bit of a luxury. ”But that didn't put him off pursuing a career in medicine himself.
He attended Latymer Upper School on the banks of the River Thames before qualifying as a medical doctor at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead in 1976.
