Jimmy Carr has revealed that he nearly died as a child, as he opens up about battling meningitis. The comedian, 51, recalled the horrific time during an appearance on the podcast Where There's A Will, There's A Wake.

Speaking to host Kathy Burke, he explained: "I had meningitis when I was a child. So my first memory is a lumbar puncture in Limerick in the General [hospital] "I was three, I think, and I was always told it was very close to death," he said, before explaining how his sense of humour helped him through the terrifying time.

Jimmy continued: "'You've got to be cruel to be kind'. I think that is the first thing I ever said that my mother thought was funny. "The doctor sort of went: 'It's going to be very painful.' And somehow I'd heard the phrase, and I went: 'You've got to be cruel to be kind,' in a little child's voice." It comes after Jimmy dropped a hint that he has welcomed a second child with his long-term partner Karoline Copping.

During his recent Netflix special Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer, he told the audience: "I'm a father now. I had kids, I'm a dad," seemingly referencing more than one "kid." Jimmy previously announced that he had welcomed his first during a gig in 2021, two years after welcoming his son Rockefeller.
