A COATBRIDGE politician highlighted the importance of protecting and conserving Scotland’s war memorials during a debate in the Scottish Parliament.Elaine Smith spoke passionately about the significance of the war memorial in her home town.Describing the Coatbridge landmark as “a remarkable and beautiful piece of art”, Ms Smith also recognised the contribution of pioneering female architect Edith Hughes who designed the memorial, which was unveiled in 1924.Central Scotland MSP Ms Smith said: “Edith Hughes was a graduate of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and set up practice in 1920.“She specialised in domestic architecture and is considered Britain’s first practicing female architect.“The most notable of her public commissions were the
