California faces 'critical' wildfire risk as heat wave builds, winds may 'hamper' containment efforts

The devastating wildfire season in California that's seen a record number of acres burn may get worse starting Wednesday as hot, dry conditions with intense winds threaten to spark more flames.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a red flag warning through Friday for Northern California due to dry, windy weather that could fuel blazes in the region. “While good progress has been made on a number of fires, this could hamper containment efforts,” Cal Fire assistant deputy director Daniel Berlant said in a briefing on Tuesday.
