Applications are now open for an apprenticeship scheme at the Manchester Evening News and Financial Times. The role is the perfect chance for a young person to kickstart their career into journalism, gaining the NCTJ qualification as they also build up experience in the field.

The scheme, which is designed to help under-represented groups get started in the news industry, is now in its second year. It runs for 18 months and involves four months of intensive study in London, followed by seven months working as a trainee reporter for the M.E.N in Manchester.

The successful candidate will then return to London to spend four month training in a Financial Times specialist publication before completing a further three months working alongside FT journalists in the field and newsroom.

The scheme, which offers the minimum London wage, is open to people who do not have a degree, particularly those living in Greater Manchester and from minority ethnic backgrounds and disadvantaged socio-economic groups.
