Actor Alan Arkin, who won an Oscar for his role in Little Miss Sunshine, has died aged 89. The news was announced Friday morning by his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, who gave a joint statement on behalf of the family to People magazine.
The statement read: “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.” Arkin was born in 1934 in Brooklyn, New York.
His family were Jewish emigrants from Russia and Germany. His father was an artist and writer, and his mother was a teacher.
He made his first big screen appearance as an uncredited singer in Fred Sears’s Calypso Heat Wave. Arkin made his Broadway debut in the musical From the Second City.
