Airdrie opened their competitive season with defeat to Alloa in the Betfred Cup. Alan Trouten opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a controversial handball call, before a Robert Thomson header made sure of the Group H points.

The visitors applied all the opening pressure as the Diamonds struggled to find a foothold in their first competitive game in six months.

They got their reward after 13 minutes as Paul McKay was adjudged to have handled Kevin Cawley’s cross from the left by whistler Stephen Reid.

Former Albion Rovers midfielder Trouten stepped up to calmly bury the ball into the bottom left corner and send debuting Max Currie the wrong way.
