Wigan Warriors head coach Adrian Lam is clinging to the hope that a solution is found to ensure the World Cup goes ahead this year.
Rugby League World Cup chairman Chris Brindley said on Monday that the tournament’s organisers have held “constructive discussions” during an emergency board meeting following Australia and New Zealand’s withdrawal.
The World Cup has been backed by the UK government by around £25 million and is due to be held in England in October and November.
But the two top-ranked nations pulled out last Thursday, citing concerns about player welfare amid rising numbers of Covid-19 cases in the UK.
