Being stuck with a nickname you despise can be exasperating.Nicknames can originate from various sources, and while some are simply abbreviated forms of your real name, others may stem from an infamous incident that remains associated with you for years. However, one woman expressed her frustration at her workmates' insistence on using a nickname she hates.

The nickname doesn't derive from something she did at work or even from her actual name - they only use it because they struggle to pronounce her full name correctly and haven't made the effort to learn it.In a Reddit post, the woman revealed she has an "Eastern European" name, which English-speaking individuals often find difficult to pronounce, as it doesn't sound as one might initially expect.Rather than attempting to learn how to pronounce her name, her colleagues resorted to calling her by a nickname, which started to "really bother her" to the extent she "cringes" every time someone uses it.She said: "My name is Eastern European and English-speaking people have trouble pronouncing it, so one of my colleagues started calling me by a nickname that's a shorter version of my name and easier to pronounce - but I absolutely hate it."I probably should've said something straight away a year ago, but I didn't and it's really bothering me, I cringe every day when they call me by that nickname.

Would it be weird if I said on teams 'I'd prefer if you called me by my real name', after a whole year of having that nickname?

I don't want to come off as 'being extra'."The woman did not reveal the specific nickname used by her colleagues, but she mentioned in the comments her actual name is Jelena, which is correctly pronounced "Ye-le-na".
