She's the irascible head housekeeper who keeps the seat of the Clan MacKenzie in Outlander in tip-top shape. A fan favourite, Glenna FitzGibbons, or Mrs Fitz as she's affectionately known, takes short shrift from most, taking newcomer to Castle Leoch, Claire Fraser, under her wing.The actress who plays her, Annette Badland, recently shared her delight at being able to tap into her Scottish roots for the part.

The 71-year-old star, who also played Aunt Babe in Eastenders, told the Scottish Daily Express that one of her greatest thrills was perfecting the Scottish accent.

The English actress, who is originally from Edgbaston in Birmingham, has a Scottish mother, who was born just outside Edinburgh, and was keen not to let her down.She said: "I was very thrilled to be playing a Scot, and Scottish history I think is very important and not always told."My mum came from just outside Edinburgh from Loanhead, so I was terribly pleased that people thought I sounded Scottish, and I hadn’t let my mum down- it’s nice to have been thought to be a Scot."Annette joked that she was one of the original three to get cast for the show, and revealed she has fond memories of season one and Sam in particular."I was one of the first three to be cast along with Sam and Tobias Menzies so we were the first three to be cast which was wonderful," she recalled."I remember meeting Sam, he walked into the room and I kind of gasped.

But what really took my breath away was that he was just such a beautiful man, he wasn't arrogant and he didn't come across as though ‘Oh you’re really going to want to meet me.’"He was just a polite and kind boy."The veteran actress, who many Scots of a certain age will remember from her starring roles in Children's TV
