It was a West Lothian one-two at the ORCi Stock Rod Scottish Championship, staged in Cowdenbeath, writes Jim Turner. The driving was made all the more difficult as rain started to fall not long after the start but credit to the drivers for producing a fascinating race.Kirknewton’s Leon Stewart - the reigning British champion - started the race from the inside of row two whilst Bathgate’s David Philp Jr - the current European champion - started from the eight row.Within a lap, Stewart was in first place and soon opened up a useful lead but Philp Jr was on a charge and he began to eat into the advantage which Stewart had built up.With five laps remaining the cars were nose to tail and sometimes even side by side as they jostled for first place.Although finding grip was at a premium, starting the last lap Philp Jr took the lead only to drift wide on the last bend.
That allowed Stewart to dive inside and grab the lead before crossing the line for his first Scottish Championship title with Philp Jr in second place then announcing his retirement from the sport after the race. Don't miss the latest news from the West Lothian Courier.
